Chapter Thirty-Five

The Cause of Death

BARcelona, Radisson Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida

Sitting at a table in the BARcelona restaurant in the Radisson, DiMeglio was having lunch alone, reviewing his notes. The police report confirmed that the crime scene was scrubbed clean. Just like all the others. His lab team from Quantico found nothing. Whoever was killing these lawyers knew how to leave no trace. They either had police training or were self-educated. That wasn’t hard to do. The internet, particularly the Dark Web, had plenty of how-to texts and videos on wiping crime scenes clean.

His phone rang. It read, MDME, as in Miami-Dade Medical Examiner.

“Agent DiMeglio,” the doctor said, “it wasn’t the Lexapro that killed Haynes. Not enough was in his system. But we did find enough fentanyl to kill five men.”

DiMeglio immediately assumed the killer administered the fentanyl by simply swapping legitimate tablets with

fentanyl-laced replacements. The killer didn’t even need to be there when Haynes took his regular dose of Lexapro. An easy crime scene to clean since it required no effort at all once the killer planted the pills. Just wipe for prints.

He called Stokes. “Brad, do you have the hallway video of the four days Haynes had the room yet?”

“No, Chief, I’m working on it. It seems the system has been having problems lately. I’m not surprised.”

“Nor am I. Let’s get the names and contact info for all the hotel workers who had reason to go into the room. Check who cleaned the room each day and anyone who delivered room service. Make sure you cover anyone who needed to work on anything in that room.”

“Will do, Chief. And I’ll also look at any footage that shows Haynes working the convention floor. We’ll know about any meetings he had. Maybe the techies can help us find him in the tapes with facial ID. I’m on it, Chief.”

“Thanks, Brad. Contact me immediately if you get any leads.”

He then called Lenoir Peters and told her to book flights for his team to come home.
